International Tea Day: From Field to Cup

Every cup of tea tells a story. A story of landscape, craft, culture and connection. On 21 May, Food and Agriculture Organization-led International Tea Day invites us to reflect on tea not simply as a comforting daily habit, but as a global industry that supports millions of livelihoods around the world.

According to the FAO, tea production provides income and employment for millions of families, with smallholder farmers responsible for around 60% of the world’s tea production. International Tea Day shines a light on the economic importance of tea in helping fight hunger and poverty, while encouraging more sustainable practices throughout the industry.

The day is also an opportunity to celebrate tea’s extraordinary cultural heritage. Across continents and generations, tea has become woven into moments of hospitality, ceremony and comfort. Here in Britain, tea remains one of our most enduring traditions, bringing people together morning, noon and night.

Behind every cup is a complex supply chain, and increasingly, conversations around sustainability, transparency and ethical sourcing are shaping the future of tea. Climate pressures, rising production costs and changing environmental conditions are creating significant challenges for tea-growing regions around the world. That is why the FAO’s message of creating a more sustainable tea industry “from field to cup” feels more important than ever.

At Noble Isle, provenance and craftsmanship are at the heart of everything we do, which is why we partnered with JING Tea as our current tea supplier.

Founded in 2004 by Ed Eisler, JING Tea was created with the mission of changing how people think about tea, moving away from anonymous, mass-produced blends and towards exceptional single garden teas with traceable origins and distinctive character.

What particularly resonated with us was JING Tea’s commitment to direct sourcing and long-term relationships with tea producers. Rather than relying solely on traditional auction systems, JING works directly with growers and tea masters, helping to improve traceability while ensuring more value reaches the people and communities producing the tea.

Their responsible sourcing commitments include ambitious goals around traceability, fair procurement and sustainable farming practices. JING has pledged to achieve 100% traceability across its range and continues to champion organic and “Made Without Pesticides” cultivation methods wherever possible.

This focus on sustainability is not only beneficial for the environment, but also for preserving the quality and individuality of tea itself. JING believes that the best teas come from producers who work in harmony with their landscapes, from remote Chinese mountainsides to gardens shaded by the Himalayas, protecting biodiversity and traditional craftsmanship along the way.

At Noble Isle, we share that appreciation for origin, storytelling and authenticity. Just as our fragrance and bathing collections celebrate the natural richness and makers of the British Isles, JING Tea celebrates the people, places and traditions behind every harvest.

International Tea Day reminds us that tea is far more than a daily habit. It is an agricultural lifeline for millions of families, a centuries-old cultural tradition and an industry whose future depends on thoughtful, sustainable choices.

This year, we raise a cup not only to the enjoyment of tea itself, but also to the growers, makers and communities who make every cup possible, today and for generations to come.
