Joy of Pears

At Noble Isle, our collections are inspired by the orchards, gardens and landscapes of the British Isles. Few fruits capture the charm of a traditional orchard as beautifully as the pear. Whether you have a spacious garden or a small patch of land, growing pears is both rewarding and surprisingly simple. With the right care, your pear tree can flourish for many years, offering not only delicious fruit but also a deeper connection with nature.
Below we share tips to help you start your own pear growing journey.
Choosing the Right Variety
The first step is selecting a variety that suits your taste and climate. Classic favourites such as Conference, Comice and Williams are well known for their sweetness and soft texture. For a crisp bite, consider Concorde, which combines the flavour of Conference with the smoothness of Comice. Dwarf trees are a great option if space is limited, and espalier training allows you to grow pears along a wall or fence.
Planting Your Pear Tree
Pears grow best in full sun and well drained soil. Choose a sheltered spot to protect delicate blossom from strong winds and frost. If your soil is heavy, consider planting on a slight mound to improve drainage. When planting, dig a hole large enough for the roots to spread comfortably. Add compost to enrich the soil and water thoroughly after planting.
Pollination Matters
Most pear trees need a partner for pollination, so check whether the variety you choose is self-fertile or requires a companion. If pollination is needed, plant another pear tree nearby or ensure a neighbour has a compatible variety. Bees and other pollinators will do the rest, rewarding you with blossom in spring and fruit in autumn.
Caring for Your Tree
In the first few years, focus on shaping your pear tree. Prune lightly in winter to create an open structure that allows air and light to reach the branches. Water regularly during dry spells, especially while the tree is young. Mulching with organic matter will help retain moisture and keep weeds at bay. Feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser to support strong growth and fruiting.
Harvesting and Enjoying Pears
Pears are best picked when they are mature but still firm. Allow them to ripen indoors at room temperature, where they will develop their sweetness and fragrance. Gently press near the stem; if it yields slightly, the pear is ready to enjoy. From poaching in spiced wine to slicing fresh into salads, pears are a versatile fruit that celebrates the abundance of the season.
From Orchard to Inspiration
At Noble Isle, we honour the beauty of orchards through our Perry Pear Collection. Inspired by Gloucestershire’s ancient perry pear trees, the collection captures the crisp, sparkling essence of the orchard in body washes, hand care and more. Just as homegrown pears offer nourishment and joy, our Perry Pear products bring a touch of orchard freshness for those days you don’t make it into the garden.
